Garden fresh

Torrential rains rolled through the Fox River Valley earlier today. After the clouds dispersed, it felt like the deep south - hot, steamy, sticky. But, I couldn't resist the opportunity to weed. My labors were not in vain.: I discovered lots a garden fresh beans, which Sharon and I picked for supper.

Another day of 100 degree heat

Blech!

Reminds me of our days in Missouri.

Of course there we lived with air conditioning.

Bird seed

Arianna argues that she cannot help me weed because she doesn't know the difference between weeds and flowers.

Hmm.

Of course this might very well have been plucked out of the new daylily bed had I not recognized the lead pattern A couple sunflowers arose from the cast offs from the bird feeder.

This one bloomed in this week's heat.

It took me by surprise.

Too hot

100 degrees on the garage thermometer! And no relief in sight.

We've moved into the basement . . . more or less.

What can be said about the weather?

One of a Million

Hooray!

ComEd restored power to our neighborhood this afternoon -- a full 18 hours earlier than they had said it would be restored.

Since Monday morning's brief storm nearly a million Chicagoland households have been without electricity. Even Allstate's home office in Northbrook lost power.

Since we moved to Sleepy Hollow, we've experienced numerous power outages. This was the longest.

Of course the heat is never the issue when Summer storms wreak havoc with the electrical grid; we haven't got air conditioners. But, since a well provides us with water and a septic system supports our toilets . . . . (Arianna and I walked over to Lake Sharon yesterday evening and I collected two buckets of water that I used to clear toilet bowls.)

Arianna was initially "excited" by the change of pace, but by yesterday evening the inconvenience of the circumstances was beginning to grate. As luck would have it she is attending day camp this week, so she's been out of the house for most of the day.

Now we face lots of laundry, an empty refrigerator, and a messy house to clean up.

But, the lights are back on!
